End of Waste Status: Background
According to United Nations forecasts, over the next few decades, the global population will increase to 9.1 billion people in 2050.
With the estimated population figures for 2050, almost 3 planet Earths would be needed to provide the natural resources necessary to maintain current ways of life.
The circular economy is a key element of transformation towards a more innovative, competitive and sustainable development and growth model, which allows the maximization of available resources, so that they remain in the production cycle for as long as possible and reduce the generation of waste, taking advantage of the maximum those wastes whose generation could not be avoided.
One of the lines of action on which the policies and instruments of the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy will focus is waste management.
Already in the State Framework Plan for Waste Management 2016-2022, the following principles are contemplated, in hierarchical order:
1st- Prevention of Waste Generation
2nd- Reuse
3rd- Recycling
4th- Valuation
