Water Footprint and ISO 14046
The Water Footprint is defined as the total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services produced by a company or consumed by an individual or community.
Water is a scarce resource in many parts of the world and Spain is one of them. For this reason, the evaluation of indicators that measure sustainability in water management, in companies, regions, nations and the world, is becoming increasingly important.
The calculation of the Water Footprint and ISO 14046 certification of products and organisations are an indicator that, in many cases, initiatives to reduce them lead to significant economic savings for companies.
Water Footprint
The Water Footprint Network is a powerful tool for raising public awareness, with its virtual flows of water travelling from one continent to another. Its estimates are truly striking and thought-provoking. It is the most talked-about water-related footprint and the one about which most things are published.
ISO 14046: 2014 Standard
It is a more comprehensive approach than the Water Footprint and allows for more informed conclusions to be drawn. It requires indicators related to the effects on water availability/scarcity, complemented by other indicators that assess the environmental impact of water uses on the water resource (eutrophication, acidification, ecotoxicity, etc.), human health, natural resources and ecosystems.
The Water Footprint and ISO 14046 can be calculated for products, services, organisations, buildings and events and can be assessed individually or jointly.
EQA, an independent verification body, guarantees the accuracy, reliability and transparency of the data reported in the Water Footprint calculation and the ISO 14046 certification.
