Carbon Footprint Registration

Within the context of reducing GHG emissions, Royal Decree 163/2014 has been approved to encourage the calculation and reduction of the Carbon Footprint by Spanish organizations, as well as to promote projects that improve the sink capacity of Spain, facilitating compliance with the international and community commitments assumed by Spain regarding climate change.

In this sense, the carbon footprint, compensation and CO2 absorption projects registry is created, which consists of 3 sections:

1. Section on carbon footprint and commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
2. CO2 absorption projects section.
3. Carbon footprint compensation section.

Who can complete the registration?

According to Royal Decree 163/2014, the following can be registered:

• Legal entities or self-employed workers who carry out an economic activity and generate GHG emissions, with activity in the national territory who, voluntarily, calculate their carbon footprint, carry out activities aimed at reducing it and/or offsetting their emissions.
• Natural or legal persons who voluntarily carry out and are owners of CO2 absorption projects located anywhere in the national territory.

What emissions must be taken into account for registration in the Carbon Footprint and GHG Emissions Reduction Commitments Section?

Registration in the Carbon Footprint calculation and reduction section will be carried out for:

• Scope 1 (mandatory): Emissions from direct sources, such as those generated by company-owned vehicles, from the combustion of fossil fuels, etc.
• Scope 2 (mandatory): Emissions from indirect sources associated with emissions from the generation of electricity purchased and consumed by the organization.
• Scope 3 (optional): Indirect emissions from the supply or service chain, such as the production of purchased materials, waste disposal, employee travel, etc.
